Introduction
Is it possible to design a truly comfortable home that incorporates innovation and contemporary sensibilities throughout while capturing the heart and charm of traditional cottage and modern farmhouse elements?
It is most certainly possible when interior design firm Pencil Shavings Studio and Scissortail Homes join forces!
These two nationally renowned firms partnered to showcase the immense possibilities in developing a family-friendly house to be featured in Cottages and Bungalows and American Farmhouse Style magazines. Not surprisingly, the powerhouse (pun intended) combination resulted in a home packed with inspiration and ideas to inspire homeowners nationwide.
The Story
The 2,200 square-foot project home was built in Carlton Landing, Oklahoma, situated on a corner lot overlooking a bocce field and boardwalk. On the exterior, the home is clad beautiful, white Texas stone and dark bluish charcoal siding contrasting with the black-trimmed case windows for a modern style. Inside, this farmhouse’s interior echoes a hint of Scandinavian inspiration with its clean, functional touches such as open storage built into the staircase. However, the inspiration veers from the Scandinavian influence in terms of color scheme. Rather than a monochromatic palette, this home showcases the designer’s love of color throughout the spaces.
The choice of superior materials was pivotal to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality for the home. Tile, with its versatility, visual appeal, and innate durability, proved to be an ideal specification for various areas.
To capture the right style in the master bathroom, the Pencil Shavings Studio team chose to make the backsplash the focal point by specifying Crossville’s Nest Collection to the ceiling. Nest offers a contemporary wood look that’s suited for wet area environments thanks to its extremely durable porcelain tile body. The team opted for the line’s simple yet stunning mosaic pattern for the expansive installation; the subtle, natural look is subtle yet striking as it draws the eye all the way up the wall to the space’s high ceiling.
“Tile can be used for more than just function—it adds a lot to the design of the space as well,” explained Victoria Van Vlear, brand leader for American Farmhouse Style.
For the ever-important kitchen, the design team chose to specify Crossville Porcelain Slabs for the countertops. The digitally produced surface design of these 100% porcelain slabs provide an appearance that beautifully mimics natural stone. Crossville Porcelains Slabs are a great alternative to other commonly used surfaces. These 12 mm-thick slabs provide all the performance advantages expected of commercial-grade porcelain tile, including easy maintenance and no worries of staining – perfect for a busy family kitchen. With the waterfall-to-the-floor peninsula island and an impressive overhang allowing for bar stool seating, the porcelain countertop became an easy design solution.
Conclusion
Thanks to an innovative team delving into further defining modern farmhouse style, this Oklahoma residence will offer appealing aesthetics and quality for many years to come.
